Aviaries and walk-through aviaries
Jakob Webnet aviaries on stainless ropes, masts and arches: mesh sized to the smallest bird and almost invisible to visitors.
Acier projectOverviewWhat it is
An aviary mesh keeps every bird inside and predators and wild birds outside, so the opening is set by the smallest bird in the collection. A walk-through aviary adds a third job: visitors should see the birds, not the mesh. Webnet in AISI 316 with Ø1.5 mm rope is nearly transparent, and it has no zinc for parrots to chew.
Large aviaries are rope structures: primary ropes span between masts or arches and the mesh is laced to them, so it can follow domes and curves. The walk-through aviary at Mumbai Zoo is 752 m² under Webnet Ø1.5 / W 25 mm; at Rajgir Zoo Safari, 2,750 m² is covered at 12 m high in W 30 and W 50 mm.

QuestionsFrequently asked
What mesh size is best for an aviary?
It depends on the smallest bird you keep. At Mumbai Zoo, Webnet Ø1.5/W25 keeps birds of every size safe. Collections of larger birds allow a wider mesh, which is lighter and more transparent.
Why use stainless steel rope mesh for an aviary?
Webnet is AISI 316 stainless steel, flexible enough to follow curved roofs and nearly transparent at fine sizes. With Ø1.5 mm rope, light transmission ranges from 82.9% at W25 to 91.8% at W50.
How much does aviary mesh weigh?
Webnet Ø1.5/W25 weighs 1.96 kg/m² and Ø1.5/W50 weighs 0.85 kg/m². The supporting rope structure is designed for the mesh weight plus wind and other loads.
