Helipad safety nets
Stainless Webnet edge nets on steel frames around rooftop helipads: at least 1.5 m wide, and never above the landing area.
Acier projectOverviewWhat it is
An elevated helipad needs a safety net or shelf all round the landing area, so anyone who slips or is blown off the edge has something to land in, without making an obstacle for the helicopter. The net starts level with or just below the deck, rises outward at about 10° and catches like a hammock, not a trampoline.
A standard specification is Jakob Webnet with Ø3 mm rope and a 100 mm mesh, laced to a steel frame. It does not burn, rot or degrade in sunlight. We used it on the helipad at AIIMS, New Delhi, and in a continuous ring around a circular helipad in Bengaluru.

RulesHelipad safety nets: the rules
- Nets surround the landing area but never rise above it (ICAO Annex 14).
- At least 1.5 m wide, starting level with or just below the deck and rising outward about 10°.
- A hammock, not a trampoline: it catches and holds a person.
- Drop-tested: offshore practice uses a 100 kg mass dropped from 1 m.
- Non-combustible and corrosion-proof: stainless steel rope mesh (316), not synthetics that degrade.
In India, heliports are approved by the DGCA under its Civil Aviation Requirements, based on ICAO Annex 14. Read the full guide →

QuestionsFrequently asked
How wide should a helipad safety net be?
At least 1.5 m, measured horizontally from the edge of the landing area, all round except at access points.
Can the net be higher than the helipad?
No. The net must never rise above the landing area. It starts level with or just below the deck and rises gently outward.
What material is best for a helipad net?
AISI 316 stainless steel rope mesh. It does not burn, rot or degrade in sunlight, and stays flexible for decades.
