A stainless cable railing on the stone stair of a private villa in Jhansi: 21 Jakob Ø4 mm ropes between steel posts, with radius-head ends, under a timber handrail.

01The brief
A private villa in Jhansi needed a railing for its stairs. The choice was a stainless cable railing: fine tensioned ropes that make a safe edge without a heavy balustrade. The ropes run parallel to the flight between steel posts, under a timber handrail that suits the dark stone of the stair. Acier supplied and installed the railing.
02The challenge
Stairs are where railings are tested most: people lean, pull and hold on as they climb. A cable railing must keep enough tension that the ropes do not spread under load, and every end must be anchored so it cannot loosen over time. Jhansi's hot summers also mean the fittings must allow for movement with temperature. The site is far from Mumbai, so the railing had to be measured, made and fitted with as few visits as possible.
03The solution
Acier detailed the stair in June 2017. Twenty-one Jakob Ø4 mm ropes, about 100 m in all, are tensioned between steel posts along the flight. Each rope has swaged external-thread ends finished with rounded radius heads, held in post fittings set to the 35° angle of the stair, and passes through loose sleeves at the intermediate posts. Tension is set at installation so the ropes stay straight and resist spreading.
A timber handrail runs along the top, warm to the touch and in keeping with the stone. Stainless steel needs no painting and keeps its finish over time. The ropes are thin, so the railing adds safety without blocking light or views across the stair.

04The outcome
The villa's stairs now have a light stainless railing that stays out of the way of the architecture. The ropes give a clear, safe edge and keep the space open. The project shows that Acier's railing work reaches well beyond the major cities.
